Dan Gradings and Instructor Certification As an industry body and national federation the AFTK is able to draw on its members to provide Dan Grading opportunities where they might not be available within your dojo or association. The AFTK also has established an Instructor Certification Program which outlines a set of criteria in order to help establish best practice for instructing traditional karate and kobudo in Australia and makes this certification available to its members and non-members.

Prohibited Weapons Many kobudoka train with a range of weapons, some of which are considered 'Prohibited Weapons' under various State and Territory regulations, and permission (usually through the form of a permit) must be given for possession. The AFTK does not issue any such permit but rather works with the relevant State and Territory Police and Firearms Registries to ensure instructors/practitioners meet the designated requirements under the Regulations. In NSW, permits are issued under the Weapons Prohibition Regulation 2017 (NSW). The AFTK (as of 6 December 2023) is an Approved Sporting Organisation and Approved Body under the Regulation and has been issued the following Instruments of Approval from the NSW Police Force Firearms Registry: • Clause 16(3)(a) – approved sporting organisation – Instructor permit• Clause 16(3)(b)(i) – approved body for instructor accreditation – Instructor permit• Clause 17(2) – approved sporting organisation – Sporting permit• Clause 18(1)(b) – approved sporting organisation – Overseas competitor permit Members who wish to apply for a permit should contact the Gradings and Certifications Coordinator to enquire about the process. If applying for an Instructor Permit, the instructor must have a current CPTKI, if applying for a Sporting Permit (eg for a student) then the dojo's head instructor will need to contact the AFTK and the dojo must have an AFTK CPTKI as a member.
Seminar Series and Events The AFTK operates an annual calendar of events, including training opportunities and dojo development sessions, throughout most states and territories. Member Dojo and their students receive significant discounts to these events.
